The Headquarters Campground is the closest to town at just about 3.5 miles north of Kernville along the Kern River. There are some good shady spots right next to the river. Here's the reserve america website for the campground.

Its on the way to the trail head so we can stop and get everyone that is camped there en route. They show plenty of sites available for that weekend.. I would pick sites along the east side of the A loop as they have the most tree cover and are closest to the river / furthest from the road.

Small Update - Talked with a guy from one of the jeep clubs based in the antelope valley regarding trail conditions since he usually leads a trip for his club on Sherman Pass yearly. He said difficulty wise if you've run most of the "difficult" trails in big bear (Holcomb Creek, Gold Mtn, Heartbreak Ridge, etc) without issue Sherman Pass should be no problem.

Also, who's planning on camping that weekend? Is anyone planning on heading up earlier on Friday or coming up Saturday morning vs leaving from the LA area on Friday evening?

Sat morning for me. Unless one of the hotels is reasonably priced.

Okay, Guys. I got my site reserved at Headquarters Campground Loop A, Space 005. I plan on leaving Riverside around noon to be at the campground late afternoon. See you all there.
