Special Notes

This event is intended to help new members better enjoy their membership in the SCLR. Whereas nearly all SCLR trips make for great family outings, the first half of this event is unusual in that it will consist of "classroom" time. Therefore, I recommend that this orientation be attended only by the primary driver(s) for the family.

Also, please bring a folding chair.

For those taking Hwy. 14 North, consider the shortcut through California City via 20 Mule Team Road.

For those coming North on 395, after passing Kramer Jct., Atolia will be the first sign of life. As you approach Atolia, you'll be able to see the giant old Union Mine headframe towering way in the distance on the left. As you get closer to Atolia, you'll start to see on the right the remains of an old railroad siding and a well worked mining area. Don't be too distracted by that, as the white bunkhouse is directly across the street, on the left (west) side of the highway. I'll have my D90 parked on the side of the highway right across from the driveway -- you won't miss it!

Itinerary

The Orientation will begin with a presentation and discussion about the SCLR, our trips, outfitting your Land Rover, and driving tips.

We'll adjourn the morning session for lunch at the Silver Dollar Saloon in nearby Red Mountain. Following lunch, we'll caravan to nearby 4x4 trails and enjoy the next couple of hours offroad. We hope to break at about 4:00 pm and recommend your having dinner along the way home.
