Description

Death Valley Pleasant Canyon Loop
Briggs Bridge
Trip Leader Coy Glasscock
Pleasant Canyon / Southpark Trail

Trip level Moderate

Two days exploring some of the best old mining sites in Death Valley. This route will take us through the Briggs Camp area and over the Briggs Bridge where we will continue to the South Park area of Death Valley for one night of “Dry” primitive camping. Then we will continue the next morning back around to the World Beater mine and back down Pleasant Canyon trail. This is a easy trail, so any Land Rover will be able to make this trip. Although the road is an easy one it may not be ideal for those with a fear of heights. There are many places on this trail contains no room for error above the steep cliffs.

Day 1:
We will meet at 10:30 AM in Ballarat, CA in front of the General Store near the intersection of Ballarat Road and Indian Ranch Road (36degrees, 02minutes, 52seconds North & 117degrees, 13minutes,26seconds West). You should to be gassed up and have all supplies before you get there. We will then head south down Wingate Road for approximately 4 miles and turn east on the Briggs Camp trail. We will then snake through the canyon for about 4 miles until we get to Briggs Camp where we will break for lunch (please bring you own). After lunch we will continue to head up the canyon for about another 4 miles until we reach the boundary of Death Valley National Park and set-up camp in the South Park area. Again this is dry camping so everything you need needs to be brought with you and “everything” needs to be packed out the next morning.

Day 2.
We will break camp and hit the trail around 9:00 AM and head north for about 4 miles before we turn on Pleasant Canyon trail. We will then follow the Pleasant Canyon trail west taking our time and exploring several mines and mining camps including Ratcliff Mine and World Beater where we will break for lunch, and then continuing along the approximate 10 mile trail back to Ballarat.

This trip is a very scenic trip with lots of chances to explore mines and abandoned camps (ghost towns) and is great for whole family. Please remember to pack in everything you may need including lots of water, it will be hot and dry in Death Valley.

Again please be prepared:
First-Aid kit, Gas, Water, ect. Good tires with a spare. Temps should be hot during the day but be prepared for cool temps at night.
