Description

Racetrack Valley
Lippincott Mine

Three days, two nights in Death Valley – April 10 thru 12 A relatively easy, but scenic three days visiting some of the ‘standards’ in Death Valley. Coincides with the last few days of spring break for those with kids.

Actually this is intended to be a kid friendly trip, with overnight camping in the same place for both nights. Offroad is predominantly dirt roads, and the true 4WD roads shouldn’t rate much more than 5 out of 10 unless White Top Mountain Road is in poor condition.

Day One – Early departure LA/Orange County, travelling to Death Valley via Baker (15 Fwy), Shoshone (Hwy 127), then Hwy 178 into Death Valley proper. Stopping off at Ashford Mills, Badwater, Artists Drive/Palette, and then Ubehebe Crater. Then travelling south into Racetrack Valley and overnight camping at Homestake Dry Camp. This is wild camping, primitive, no facilities exist. Bring absolutely everything you need with you. The plan is to arrive here mid afternoon.

Activities for the next two days will depend on road conditions on South Pass, and what people are up for.

Day Two – Apart from visiting the moving rocks on Racetrack Playa, and exploring Lippincott Mine, we could either travel down Lippincott Mine Road into Saline Valley, and then onto Snow Flake Talc Mine. The shelf road to Snow Flake Talc Mine is steep/narrow and offers no opportunity to turn round other than at each switchback. Traction may be limited by loose rocks. Some rocks may need to be stacked. Views of Saline Valley 2,000ft below. Returning to Racetrack Valley via same route. An alternate to Lippincott/Snow Flake would be to travel into Hidden Valley and explore White Top Mountain Road.

Day Three – We’ll drop down Lippincott Mine Road, and climb up thru Grapevine Canyon/South Pass (if conditions on So. Pass are good), and on to Olancha for a late lunch, before returning to LA via 395/14 Fwy. If South Pass is closed due to snow, we’ll have to retrace to Ubehebe, Stovepipe Wells, and Panamint Springs.

Usual disclaimers and recommendations apply. Decent off-road tires, full size spare, sufficient fuel, adequate clearance etc. Air dams and running boards not recommended.

Camping as noted above there are absolutley no facilities here. Bring everything. Food, water, a poop scoop & toilet paper. Racetrack Valley is approx. 3,700ft above sea level, so expect pleasant daytime temperatures, but cold nights at this time of year. I’ll be bringing a BBQ rack & charcoal. Fire wood is always useful.

Details such as attempting to travel together from LA/Orange County, or rendezvous en route, and/or late night arrivals in Racetrack Valley all tbd.
