Background

The Mojave Road is a centuries old route through the heart of California's East Mojave Desert. Native Americans, early American settlers, miners, military and traders all made their way along the Mojave Road, part of the famed Santa Fe trail to San Bernardino.

Now the route lies much in part within the newly established East Mojave National Preserve, administered by the National Park Service. The route is popular among SUV-explorers as a 2-3 day, point-to-point expedition, however, this trip will visit an array of historical sites along and off the beaten path.

We'll base our operations as the historic Goffs Schoolhouse, now a museum and private camping facility, featuring tent sites, showers and toilets.

Special Notes

PARTICIPANT LIMIT - 15 Vehicles, first-come, first-served via Clubhouse RSVP feature. Members only!

1. Because the National Park Service has imposed a limit on the size of our group, we would ask those who RSVP to commit to both days of the trip.

2. It will not be necessary to carry extra gasoline as long as you gas up in Fenner before arriving in Goffs. The group will return to Fenner on Saturday to refuel for Sunday's journey.

3. A donation (~$10) to the Goffs Schoolhouse is requested from participants in appreciation for their allowing us to stay at and use their facilities.

Vehicle & Driver Requirements

Routes consist of easy, well-travelled gravel surfaces. The trip is appropriate for all Rovers, and drivers of all experience levels are welcome. As always, we recommend good offroad tires, and, just in case, front and rear recovery points.

The trip leader will be monitoring channel 4 on CB and FRS radios.

Meeting Place

Goffs Schoolhouse, at corner of Goffs Road and Landfair Road, on the north side of the railroad tracks. Here is where we will be pitching camp on Saturday night.

Meeting Time

Saturday: 10:00 am

Meals

Please be prepared by bringing your own meals for:
    Saturday: Lunch and Dinner
    Sunday: Breakfest and Lunch

Itinerary

Saturday: The group will begin Saturday morning with a tour of the Schoolhouse museum and its exhibits, then will depart for the Leiser Ray mine. Lunch will be the Indian Springs petroglyphs, then we'll continue on to the Penny Can and Rock Springs. We'll return to Goffs, via Fenner, for dinner and a warm shower!

Sunday: We'll head west to explore the Cedar Canyon area, then continue on to Marl Springs, the Lava Tubes, more petroglyphs, then, time permitting, continuing on to 17 Mile Point. Here we'll return to pavement and begin the long ride home.

Note regarding Sunday's return home: Has anyone come home from Las Vegas on a Sunday lately?!? Traffic jams now begin outside Baker, sometimes taking three hours just to Barstow! We hope to work out a better plan for getting folks home, but do expect to have some traffic on the way home.
